Appliance Register – Covering All Concerns

Appliance Register

The Appliance Register has been set up to ensure safety within homes and small businesses that own domestic appliances. It is a simple and efficient register that pro-actively informs the clients if there is a problem with an appliance they own or if it has in fact been recalled.
Research suggests that almost half of households had never seen a recall notice before, its survey of 4,164 people indicated, with six in ten saying they would register for alerts if the seller promised not to send any junk mail. Manufacturers have tried other processes in order to inform their client base of a problem; adverts in newspapers and flyers in shop windows. However, as you can imagine, this process was not enough to get through to the public. Researchers have found that one in three people have stated that they would not get rid of their appliance if it was still working and only caused a “minor inconvenience”. This is extremely concerning as it is that type of naivety that causes such disasters within the UK.
The register is unique as it is completely independent – there are no third party add-ons to this process. It is pleasing to see others also trying to get on board with safety within homes and businesses, but not quite in the same way The Appliance Register is created. Whilst some have created useful links to manufacturers’ websites, which is commendable, this doesn’t address the concerns of the public at large about future contact from third-party warranty providers.
Emma Apter of Electrical Safety First said: “While the chances of a faulty product causing serious damage are small, the risk is still there, so we’re working with manufacturers to improve the recall system. In the meantime we urge everyone to do anything they can to look after themselves, whether that’s registering a product when you buy it or keeping an eye out for recall notices.”
Emma Apter has hit the nail on the head here, by stating that the burden of responsibility is in fact put onto the consumer once they have purchased an appliance. However, The Appliance Register is pro-active in its approach by not just keeping registrants’ details completely up to date and confidential, but by offering rapid communication to consumers in the advent that one of their appliances is faulty.
Saving consumers time and hassle is the main objective behind the idea of The Appliance Register. It is an efficient, secure service and undoubtedly a clear no-brainer for the industry of Health and Safety.
